what you risk, reveals what you value.

"The earliest pilgrims shared a cathedral for a heart. They were the temple not made with hands. The Eklasia of God. The song that carried them over the waves was the hymn that rung the rafters. Their throats were bare for God. Look at them now, heads thrown back, mouths open, alone but for the gulls that dip the prow. Against the too salt sea and the inhospitable sky, their voices made a screen of praise.

Love it was that drove them forth. Love that brought them home again. Love hardened their hands against the oar and heated their sinews against the rain. The journeys they made were beyond common sense; who leaves the hearth for the open sea? especially without a compass, especially in winter, especially alone. What you risk reveals what you value. In the presence of love, hearth and quest become one. "

Winter Sunshine.

Mumbai is inordinately cold this winter, and its got everyone surprised. So am I. But this year is so magical, this just adds to the sparkle of our love. The maddening intensity of it all. So since we're getting to enjoy cold this year, I'm gettin to do ALL of those things i havent done since my childhood days. Like turning my face up to the faint winter sun, going for a lovely walk in the afternoon, snuggling under quilts in the mornings, sipping on hot coffee wearing a sweater. Have pockets full of lozenges, and tissues. I think I'm just feeling colder because I want to enjoy it soo much.

Being in Mumbai for four years now, has made me this HUGE rain lover. I LOVE walking in the rain. And walking in the winter sun is my absolute second favourite after that. I dont know, but winter sunshine is just more yellow compared to the summer's . I love the way it falls between leaves, making patterns on stone walkways. Its almost palpable- like you can put your hand out and get a handful of yellowing gold. Lighting brown eyes to honey. Putting a resplendent glow on faces that are framed with wool. Picking out subtle highlights in my auburn hair. Playing with the diamonds in rings, throwing rainbows on keyboards. I love sitting next to the window and feel the warmth on the back of my neck. Like a silent love. It deepens the myriad smiles on your lips, so sweet.

'Til Kingdom Come....

How ironic to have found this song TODAY!
How very ironic really. I really adore Coldplay. Have you seen the video of their lovely song "Fix You" ? In the end, the entire audience sings along with Chris Martin.... though I know THAT is nothing new in concerts, I just adore the way everyONE sings "And igg-ni-ii-ii-ii-tteee your bones...."
They (Coldplay) sing INTO your hearts... though my love and admiration for Coldplay is relatively new, considering how long they have been around, I hope they never stop! More than anything, I love the way a song gets inside your head, and till you listen to it on repeat, doesn't let go...
Every song of theirs becomes "Favourite Coldplay Number of the Fortnight!"!

I just truly love them!

And the song, the ironic song!

" Steal my heart and hold my tongue
I feel my time, my time has come
Let me in, unlock the door
I've never felt this way before

And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummer begins to drum
I don't know which way I'm going
I don't know which way I've come

Hold my head inside your hands
I need someone who understands
I need someone, someone who hears
For you, I've waited all these years

For you I'd wait 'til kingdom come
Until my day, my day is done
And say you'll come and set me free
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me

In your tears and in your blood
In your fire and in your flood
I hear you laugh, I heard you sing
I wouldn't change a single thing

And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummers begin to drum
I don't know which way I'm going
I don't know what I'll become

For you I'd wait 'til kingdom come
Until my days, my days are done
And say you'll come and set me free
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me.

Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me.
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for ME

An Equal Music, Seth.

I shall always call this book special. Not only for the obvious reason, ie, it is a good book, though if I were being completely honest, I would think it was missing something.
Anyways, the other reason why this book will always be special is because, it was the first thing I bought with my VERY hard earned stipend! It was such an enormously delightful time I had, in the bookstore chain, browsing through, for a potential "First book". I think I stayed there for more than three hours, and then finally picked up what I had zeroed in on, in the first five minutes!
I have lugged this book around from Churchgate to Andheri, have read it standing up poker straight holding on for dear life, waiting for the 5:15 Borivali Fast, have read and re-read parts of this book continuously, and have felt a strange sense of loss when I finally finished it.

The one thing I don't understand is why do people ask me the (to me) quite senseless and silly question, "When do you GET time to read all these 'novels'?" To which I reply, "Travelling", but honestly, I don't need to FIND time, if I don't read something, anything, I feel a sense of emptiness. I hate that. Last year, I did not read much, and I felt horrible bout it. SO, this would be my new-year resolution, if I believed in them, to read MORE.

Sparks...

Did I drive you away?
I know what you'll say
You'll say, "Oh, sing one we know"
But I promise you this
I'll always look out for you
That's what I'll do

I say "oh"
I say "oh"

My heart is yours
It's you that I hold on to
That's what I do
And I know I was wrong
But I won't let you down
(Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah I will, yes I will…)

I said "oh"
I cry "oh"

Yeah I saw sparks
Yeah I saw sparks
And I saw sparks
Yeah I saw sparks

Singing out

La, la, la, la, oh…
La, la, la, la, oh…
La, la, la, la, oh…
La, la, la, la, oh…

COLDPLAY.

What a wonderful song.

A Fine Balance.

I have just finished reading yet another of those "novels" I keep lugging about and have to show the cover to the aah-so-interested people in my day. Usually this interest last only as long as to see that the very heavy book I'm soo engrossed in, is not the latest harry potter/ eragon/dan brown/ bullshit, and thus is returned to me without further comment. During my love affair with Seth's magnus opus A suitable boy, I lost count of the number of people who tried to pull the same joke off " Oh! are you finding a suitable boy for yourself?" ha ha . Fact of the matter is that today's generation of non-readers and their kin, whose entire literary column extends to three or four very famous books/authors are oblivious to the entire joyousness of the good Ole experience of reading a book, the entire span of the days when you live the characters, laugh at their experiences and mourn with them at their misfortunes. Nowadays it is more of a race, so as to say, to read the newest best seller, lest anyone should let the cat out of the bag.

I, when I was younger, steered clear of Indian authors. For me, what they wrote was too close to home. If I read a book, I wanted to be lost in the English scones and the Californian sun. So I read up the usual "English Fiction" stuff... Archer, Sheldon, Follet (my fav!), Grisham (whom I still can't read)...
But how long can anyone read a book with the usual half a dozen murders, a couple of illicit romances, and the everyday million dollars of embezzlement?

And that is when I found A Suitable Boy. I know I sound like i can kiss the earth Vikram Seth walks on, but honestly, this book changed the way I read. My choice of books and thus, a large and significant part of my life. A good book stays with you, and I usually re-read my favourites, but this one book is one I don't want to, for the simple reason that if you were to return to a long lost lover, they would always dull when compared to the memory you had of them . The affair would seem far more glamorous than it was actually, and the second acquaintance, would thus diminish the joy of your first one.

So, anyways, my experience with my first Indian author encouraged me to read more. and that is how i chose Mr Rohinton Mistry, Family Matters. I remember the same feeling enveloped me the last time i read him as is now while reading A fine balance.

The thing about reading any of his works, is that the characters begin to grow on you. You pray that no more misfortunes land up on the poor things, for you would most definitely be heart broken. You rejoice in the small breaks God ( in this case the author) bestows upon them. Mistry has this annoying habit of making an indifferent character likeable, and then killing him off just when you really like him. There is something perverse about the way he kills them off, like flies dropping dead. Maybe I have read such sheltered literature, that such stark brutality left me quite speechless. The whole concept of "happy endings" is obliterated in his brand of writing.

In "A fine balance", more specifically, the story revolves around four central characters. Dina Dalal, the beautiful and headstrong landlady, Maneck- her teenage PG and an immensely likeable and thoughtful boy, Ishwar the sweet-tempered tailor and Omprakash- his hotheaded nephew. It is a tale which starts from the day these four characters meet and paces back and forth, tracing their entire lives and histories to the very day. Thus begins a year in their life, full of so many ups and mainly downs. It is a poignant tale, leaving you quite depressed at some of the things that happen. When Dina Dalal's heart finally begins to melt towards the tailors, I found myself praying that Mr Mistry keeps it that ways. But in the end, I felt that in an attempt to wind up ALL the loose ends, the author has decided a common fate for all, except three, and that is, a grisly death. And the one person who actually deserved it, Thakur Dhamsali, is the only one who keeps appearing in the poor tailors life, periodically, and (to put it rather colloquially), keeps screwing up their plans.

The last chapter has been written, probably when the author realised that he is, in fact quite capable of twisting the hearts of his readers. It has been spun in such a way that he was probably tired of them all, and has in his fatigue resigned them horrible fates including beggary and sudden unthinking death.

That is what I didn't quite like about the book. The rest of the book is written so marvellously, true to his usual style. But I don't know why his characters are always Parsi, and settled in southern Bombay. Maybe its because he prefers to stick to areas that must be familiar to him.
It is impossible to have read his book and not have come out feeling moved. Either depressed, helpless, or happy, because you have also lived the characters.
Another VERY surprising fact is that the book was Oprah's book club choice for 2002. Now i would not have expected that out of the perfectly made up, pastel dressed women who work for Oprah!

But again, like my usual favourites, I will not be recommending this book to anyone. I HATE them not understanding it, and then acting foolishly and telling me "HOW depressing! you have such a morbid taste in art!"

About winter, happy smiles and drying flowers.....

Lately, I've been getting news about people falling in love from all quarters.... old school friends, college pals, colleagues, cousins, you name it- and they've fallen in love! Its so cool! I feel so nice to see everyone coupling up....and though I'm otherwise occupied (ie, too much work, I'm married to my books!).... I'm just loving it!

Its getting fractionally colder, and people are pulling out their pull overs. The air is getting crispier and I keep needing moisturiser. After monsoons, I like winters second best, because its such a nice time to walk in the afternoon sunshine. I remember, when I was nine and was down with chicken pox in the winter, and I'd spend all my afternoons in the sprawling lawns updating my "dried flowers" collection.... pressing them into heavy hardbounds, borrowing them from Dad... so things like "World War 2 : Strategy" had a daisy drying on page 257 and a chrysanthemum falling out of page 674....

It's lovely being in a sidewalk cafe on a wintry afternoon, and feeling the sunlight streaming down on cold faces. And smiling stupidly, wearing gaily colored sweaters and sneakers.

Today I was walking down a street early evening, and there was this cute little girl in her school uniform playing about at a bus stop a happy smile faint on her lips. She looked at me and smiled hestitantly, testingly... and I smiled back, because it felt so right....to smile like that- unmindful and without reason...

Make three wishes....

another beautiful excerpt from one of my fav books....

" You said, 'I love you and my love for you makes any other life a lie.' Can this be true, this simple obvious message, or am I like those shipwrecked mariners who seize an empty bottle and eagerly read out what isn't there? And yet you are there, here, sprung like a genie to ten times your natural size, towering over me, holding me in your arms like mountain sides. Your hair is blazing and you are saying, 'Make three wishes and they shall all come true. Make three hundred and I will honour every one.' "

Are you lonesome tonight?

Elvis Presley. I have never felt so completely touched by a person's voice ever before. In the middle of this song, its more of a monologue, and its been written so beautifully, anyone could fall in love with the person who's written them. (Or Presley for singing them like that!)

(Words & music: Roy Turk / Lou Handman)
"Are you lonesome tonight,do you miss me tonight?
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
Does your memory stray to a brighter sunny day
When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?

Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?
Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?
I wonder if you’re lonesome tonight
You know someone said that the world’s a stage
And each must play a part.
Fate had me playing in love you as my sweet heart.
Act one was when we met, I loved you at first glance
You read your line so cleverly and never missed a cue
Then came act two, you seemed to change and you acted strange
And why I’ll never know.
Honey, you lied when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you.
But I’d rather go on hearing your lies
Than go on living without you.
Now the stage is bare and I’m standing there
With emptiness all around
And if you won’t come back to me
Then they can bring the curtain down.

Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?"

There is that something about those old hollywood romances. The proper-ness and the cliched-ness of it all. Its heart-breakingly sweet. There are few things better than an out-an-out romantic film/book/song. Something plain and simple, but so beautiful in its simplicity.
The Hero is always a Robert Redford, and the heroine is just the prettiest. He's all macho, and she's chiffon-and-ribbon frail . Its so perfect.

No wonder everyone loves Mills n Boons. Its just a bit of Paris in everyday life! It appeals to almost all uncycnical, romantic females because probably we all would want that Paris in our lives. But we're grounded, and the fountains of Veinna are reserved for a whirlwind trip of Europe (in 14 days!), so whats wrong with a li'l old fashioned romance, even if it is in a dog-eared paperback? It's so nice to put down a book with a huge grin on your face!

Def Leppard- Love Bites

This is, according to me, The Reason why God sent Def Lep to Earth!!! Seriously, were you to have half an ear, and love for 80's slow rock, this would be YOUR fav song as well. Its just so awesome.
I remember seeing it this August on Vh1, and for a song that released in 1987, thts something!
Someone on sing365.com reviewed it like this, and I couldn't have said it better myself!

" Love Bites is so sexy and alluring as my title says. A concert I recently attended definitely showed the electricity with this song. Every woman that had a mate was busy grinding them and was so into the lyrics of the song. The song is so magical and can transform a woman into an animal!!! "

Hmm, now this person got a lil graphic, but its true!
My fav lines are these- I love the way they've been sung

"I don't wanna touch you too much baby
'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy
I know you think that love is the way you make it
So I don't wanna be there when you decide to break it

No!"

Actually this entire song is one long sigh! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhhh....

this is the album Hysteria ('87) one of their best.

the nearness of you

"Distance is no obstacle to love. In the ocean depths blue whales send sonic serenades across thousands of sonar miles. When two hearts are apart, they are still indissolubly joined, just as "twin compasses are two" separated to trace out different circles yet never doubting they will be reunited. Love is so loyal that it does not need to be present to prove it. Love knows that moments of aloneness refresh and reinforce it; it passes the surest test "for a bond between two people :that each protects the solitude of the other."

By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept.

"If pain must come, may it come quickly. Because I have a life to live, and I need to live it in the best way possible. If he has to make a choice, may he make it now. Then I will either wait for him or forget him.
Waiting is painful. Forgetting is painful.
But not knowing which to do is the worst kind of feeling."

Yes, my mind was wandering. I wished I were there with someone who could bring peace to my heart- someone with whom I could spend a little time without being afraid that I would lose him the next day. With that assurance, the time would pass slowly. We would be silent for a while because we'd know we had the rest of our lives together for a conversation. I wouldn't have to worry about serious matters, about difficult decisions and hard words.

"It's risky, falling in love."

"I know that," I answered. "I've been in love before. Its like a narcotic. At first it brings the euphoria of complete surrender. The next day, you want more. You're not addicted yet, but you like the sensation, and you think you can still control things. You think about the person you love for two minutes, and forget them for three hours.

"But then you get used to that person, and you begin to be completely dependent on them. Now you think about him for three hours and forget him for two minutes. If he's not there, you feel like an addict who can't get a fix. And just as addicts steal and humiliate themselves to get what they need, you're willing to do anything for love."

"What a horrible way to put it,"he said.

By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept, Paulo Coelho.

Love, even its illusion has altered my choice of books. Or maybe I've just grown up.
I love this book, its been written in a Classic Paulo Coelho manner, and its just beautiful.

long gone

'I think about my life gone by
How it's done me wrong
There's no escape for me this time
All of my rescues are gone, long gone.....'

Richard Marx...

There is something quite desperate in his voice when he sings these lines from the song 'Hazard'... Its so plain with longing...it makes me sad. There is always a time before my exams when these lines come to haunt me!!

These guys - Richard Marx, Michael Hutchence, Sting, Bryan Adams.... all of them have similar sounding voices.... husky and deep....and seriously, plain sexy.

I carry your heart with me.

"I carry your heart with me
I carry your heart with me (I carry it in

my heart) I am never without it (anywhere
I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)

I fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) I want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
I carry your heart (I carry it in my heart)"

Hope dangles on a string
Like slow spinning redemption
Winding in and winding out
The shine of it has caught my eye
And roped me in
So mesmerizing, so hypnotizing
I am captivated....

close to you

"Close To You"

"Why do birds suddenly appear
Everytime you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you...

Why do stars fall off from the sky
Everytime you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be,
Close to you...

On the day that you were born
The angels got together
They decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair
And put a starlight in your eyes so blue

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you, all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you...

Just like me, they long to be
Close to you....

Just like me, they long to be
Close to you....

Aah... Close to you.... "

at my most beautiful...

Some songs are so simple, so plain about being in love. The writers havent made a fuss about being in love, and getting with it, u know. I hate songs that have lyrics like "Come over, suger-cube, i wanna touch you..." Not only is tht icky, it also makes for bad music taste! (lol!)

"I've found a way to make you
I've found a way
A way to make you smile

I read bad poetry
Into your machine
I save your messages
Just to hear your voice
You always listen carefully
To awkward rhymes
You always say your name,
Like I wouldn't know it's you,
At your most beautiful

At my most beautiful
I count your eyelashes, secretly
With every one, whisper I love you
I let you sleep
I know you're closed eye watching me,
Listening
I thought I saw a smile..."
R.E.M

or this one, poignant and no hang-ups,

" Just a Perfect Day
Drank Sangria in the Park
And Later, when it gets dark
We go Home

Just A Perfect Day
Feed Animals in the Zoo
And Later, a movie too
And then Home

It's Such a Perfect Day
I'm Glad I spent it with you
Such a Perfect Day
You Just keep me hanging on
You Just keep me hanging on....."

Love or Infatuation?

Love or Infatuation?
Infatuation is instant desire. It is one set of glands calling out to another. Love is friendship
that has caught fire. It takes root and it grows-one day at a time.
Infatuation is marked by sense of insecurity. You are excited and eager, but not genuinely happy.there are nagging doubts, unanswered questions, little bits and pieces about your beloved that you would just as soon not examine closely. It might spoil the dream. Love is quiet understanding and mature acceptance of imperfection. It is real. It gives you strength and grows beyond you- to bolster your beloved. You are warmed by his presence even when he is far away. Miles do not separate you.You want him nearer. But near or far, you know he is yours, and you can wait. Infatuation says "We must get married right away. I cant risk losing him".Love says "Be patient. Don't panic. Plan your future with confidence."Infatuation has an element of sexual excitement. If you are honest, you will admit it is difficult to be in one another's company unless you are sure it will end in intimacy. Love is the maturation of friendship. You must be friends before you can be lovers.
Infatuation lacks confidence. When he's away, you wonder if he's cheating. Sometimes you check.
Love means trust. You are calm, secure and unthreatened. He feels that trust, and it makes him even more trustworthy.
Infatuation might lead you to do things that you'll regret later, but love never will.
Love is an upper. It makes you look up. It makes you think up. It makes you a better person than you were before.

Ann Landers,
From "Chicken Soup for the Romantic Soul.

This is undoubtedly my favourite piece of writing. I had to write it up and put it here! Lurve it!

"Strain this chaos turn it into light,
I've gotta see you one last night,
Before the lions take their share,
Leave us in pieces, scattered everywhere,

Just give me a chance to hold on
Just give me something to hold onto,

It's so clear now that you are all that I have,
I have no fear cause you are all that I have,

You're cinematic razor sharp,
A welcome arrow through the heart,
Under your skin feels like home,
Electric shocks on aching bones,

Just give me something hold onto,
It's so clear now that you are all that I have,
