There used to be an advt on t.v. i think bout dhara oil or somethin, in which a lil kid (parzan sumthin-sumthin!!) was running away from home and his mother sends "ramu kaka" (but obviously!!) to bring him back from the station... and dear ol ramu kaka tells the kid tht his mom has made 'jalebi's at home... and tht kid goes "JALEEBBBEEIIIIIEEE???!!!!"...needless to say, comes back home immediately...
Well, ... tht kid could very well have been me!! Id go anywhere for jalebi, do anything for jalebi and attend any distant relations wedding for jalebi... YUM!! i love the jalebi!! (i think, we all guessed tht!!!!) (And, my best record so far has been to polish off 1/2 a kg in sum nanoseconds... )
The jalebi, is I believe, the yummiest thing ever concocted by the millions of years of sweetmaking in India. Its a very fine thing too... To get the crunchy crispiness on the outside and to get the sugary-syrupy golden fluid inside just right...
And from Wikipedia:-
"Jalebi is a sweet commonly sold in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Jalebi is thought to have originated in the North of India, probably in the state of Punjab. The Persian word for Jalebi is "Zoolbiah". It is made from deep-fried, syrup-soaked batter and shaped into a large, chaotic pretzel shape. Jalebis are mostly bright orange in colour but are also available in white. It can be served dripping warm or cold. It has a somewhat chewy texture with a crystallised sugary crunch. The sugars get partly fermented which is thought to add flavour to the dish. Jalebi is sold at Halwai shops and at traditional sub continental sweet shops. The southern Indian lookalike is jangiri. Along with Jalebi Another version of it, "Emarti" is red-orange in colour and sweeter in taste from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh"
