Elvis Presley. I have never felt so completely touched by a person's voice ever before. In the middle of this song, its more of a monologue, and its been written so beautifully, anyone could fall in love with the person who's written them. (Or Presley for singing them like that!)
(Words & music: Roy Turk / Lou Handman)
"Are you lonesome tonight,do you miss me tonight?
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
Does your memory stray to a brighter sunny day
When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?
Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare?
Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there?
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?

Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?
I wonder if you’re lonesome tonight
You know someone said that the world’s a stage
And each must play a part.
Fate had me playing in love you as my sweet heart.
Act one was when we met, I loved you at first glance
You read your line so cleverly and never missed a cue
Then came act two, you seemed to change and you acted strange
And why I’ll never know.
Honey, you lied when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you.
But I’d rather go on hearing your lies
Than go on living without you.
Now the stage is bare and I’m standing there
With emptiness all around
And if you won’t come back to me
Then they can bring the curtain down.
Is your heart filled with pain, shall I come back again?
Tell me dear, are you lonesome tonight?"
There is that something about those old hollywood romances. The proper-ness and the cliched-ness of it all. Its heart-breakingly sweet. There are few things better than an out-an-out romantic film/book/song. Something plain and simple, but so beautiful in its simplicity.
The Hero is always a Robert Redford, and the heroine is just the prettiest. He's all macho, and she's chiffon-and-ribbon frail . Its so perfect.
No wonder everyone loves Mills n Boons. Its just a bit of Paris in everyday life! It appeals to almost all uncycnical, romantic females because probably we all would want that Paris in our lives. But we're grounded, and the fountains of Veinna are reserved for a whirlwind trip of Europe (in 14 days!), so whats wrong with a li'l old fashioned romance, even if it is in a dog-eared paperback? It's so nice to put down a book with a huge grin on your face!
